Police have been called after at least one copycat Facebook group appeared following the Roast Busters underage sex scandal. - New Zealand Herald
I have never been so disgusted in the attitude of my own country.
After such promising and brilliant development over the past year alone, with the passing of the LGBT bill for gay rights in August and ranking in the top ten (7) for gender equality out of 133 countries, New Zealand was becoming a nation I was proud to be born in and grateful to watch the significant steps we were making as a country to become a community progressing towards social development for the benefit of a new generation of strong minded, proud and independent Kiwis’.
Unfortunately, my pride was misplaced. This group of jokers, the ‘Roast Busters’ have been skulking under the radar, thinking they have the right to take advantage of intoxicated girls under the age of consent, then arrogantly take further steps to degrade and humiliate them over social media, bragging about their disgusting actions as if they have all the right in the world to do so.
Among the group, one is the son of an actor, another, the son of a New Zealand police officer.
My disgust in this situation goes beyond actions of these men, but the social position that a portion of the New Zealand community seems to hold.
Because apparently, in New Zealand, people aren’t taught not to rape, girls should be taught how not to be raped. And yes. That is the situation; these girls under the age of consent, one alleged to be the age of 13, were raped. Yet for some unknown reason this community believes these intoxicated underage girls have the ability to make this decision: “they should know what their getting into”
This Rape culture has a choke hold on our society as a whole, not just in New Zealand. A global social stigma that makes me sick, as these young girls have somehow been pushed into the position of blame, after experiencing the worst form of human degradation.
This post has my heart in it, and I know a majority of the Tumblr population may ignore this, but it’s a situation that some may find not quite as easy to do so.
People need to be aware of the results of this despicable form of arrogance.
